ASIC
An ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) is an integrated circuit (IC) customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use. For example, a chip designed solely to run a cell phone is an ASIC.

Components that process sound, e.g. speakers/receivers and microphones. Since telecoils indirectly also process sound, Sonion includes them in this term.

Electromechanical components (EMC)
Components that a user can activate to change a function, e.g. volume controls and on/off buttons. Sonion considers programming systems to be electromechanical components.

EUR
Abbreviation for the European currency euro.

Hearing instrument
An instrument that helps hearing-impaired communicate better. Hearing instruments are made to be worn behind the ear or in the ear. In-the-ear hearing instruments fill most of the ear opening or are almost completely invisible.

MEMS
Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems. The technology has its source in the processes used for manufacturing integrated circuits. The technology enables structure sizes down to a few micrometers through the use of photolithography and improvements in performance and tolerance.

The technical term for a mobile phone (or handset) or other mobile communication devices.

Silicon microphone
Microphone made of silicon that is based on and manufactured using MEMS technology. These microphones are manufactured on silicon wafers that are often between 100 and 200 mm in diameter; the microphones are subsequently diced out of the wafer.

Six Sigma
It is a methodology to manage process variations that cause defects and to systematically work towards managing variation to eliminate those defects. The objective of Six Sigma is to deliver world-class performance, reliability, and value to the end customer.
